I guess we all have our own jar of troubles but I really do not think that the blog is the proper forum or soap box. I much prefer to see the pretty and the glamourous.
I love this post. I've often found myself thinking about the same thing. It's important to be authentic to yourself, but some people run the risk of offending others by speaking their mind too freely.

I'll never forget a few years back when I was so offended by one of the super star bloggers out there. She made some comment about how people who had been laid off were lazy or weren't good enough to keep their jobs in the first place. Something along those lines. Well, I was one of those who was laid off when 60% of my company was let go back in 2008. It wasn't because I was lazy or because I didn't do a good job. I'll never forget reading that post, and here we are almost four years later. I was already devastated and then to read that was just so hurtful and really just showed her naiveté.

And while I still read her every now and then, I always have a slightly bad taste in my mouth while doing so. I think she learned her lesson though because she followed up with no less than two apology posts. And not that I like revenge, but I thought it was interesting when she ended up getting laid off about a year later.

You just never know who you're going to offend regardless of the topic, so people need to be careful.

great thoughtful post, alex. i agree that when a blogger gets political out of nowhere, it's jarring and hard to accept. i do appreciate when bloggers share a bit more about themselves though, what they're really about beyond what they want to show us every day, just like you did here. :)

I think it really depends on the blogger. If they have a specific fashion or interior design blog say and one day they rant about organic cheese then yeah I might be like what is going on over there but at the same time try to remember that this is their blog so they can post whatever they want. In general if I enjoy a blogger I will usually read all of their posts whether I can relate to them or not. I will say though that there are a lot of blogs that have become polarizing on certain topics and I've had to stop following them because they aren't well thought out and almost offensive.

Personally there have been plenty of time I've wanted to rant and rave about the crazy stuff that happens. But I think as a blogger you need to keep it all in context. I visit blogs because I like the content/subject matter, and when I go there to get my daily fix of whatever I'd prefer to not see a post about something not related to their blog. Yes I get that big things happen and you want to write about it, I'm totally guilt of this (we're adopting a puppy and I might have dedicated a couple of blog posts to him, oops). But I think giving your readers consistency is important, and I don't want to get depressed by reading some one's blog :)

I've realized that most readers like to read about the lives of bloggers and what goes on in in their everyday lives that is fun, happy, inspirational, and comical (like the time I wrote about spilling my green smoothie ALL over my kitchen). As a blogger you're entitled to have the freedom to write whatever you wish but if you want to have a following, you should probably stick to topics that won't offend your readers.

OMG, so agree with you! I read design blogs to take my mind off the more "serious" topics of the day. I get a bit irritated with bloggers who "hijack" their blog (yes, it's their blog so they can do what they want), to talk about pregnancy, eating, major personal stuff like how they found God, etc. As a very spiritual person who has been pregnant 3 times, it's not that I don't like or understand these topics, it's just that if I wanted to read about that, I'd hit a prego blog or one about religion.
Trish

Oops... Personal life details? So unfortunately ask yourself are you writing this to make friends or make money? Probably like me it's both, and I do believe there is a balance that can be struck!

Great post Alex! I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on this, and it's something I've thought about too. Like Naomi, my blog is mainly there to promote my business. That's not to say I can't ever be personal. Ht I try to keep it light, I see it as an extension of my brand, and I want my clients to come to me and hire me because of my stylistic viewpoint, not my personal viewpoints. I try to inject a bit of personality but I definitely keep it light. Think of it this way, if an editor at Elke Decor started reading your blog, would they want to read
